Vice President, Business Affairs, International Studios


The Vice President, Business Affairs, will represent the International Studios business in its negotiations with third party providers and talent representatives and will advise and assist our international business and legal counterparts in developing, producing and exploiting global content. In addition, the individual will be responsible for coordinating with various departments in connection with legal, finance and intercompany issues and will report to the EVP, Business Affairs.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Negotiate script development, talent hold, first look and rights agreements for scripted pilot/series, mini-series, and provide expert global scripted original production insight for our international partners (e. g., global residual concerns, multi-territory guild and union matters, market-to-market production variations, etc.)
  • Negotiate U. S. above-the-line talent to render services for global scripted productions
  • Oversee day-to-day business affairs for original scripted pilots and current scripted programming, including managing talent, legal and financial issues and coordinate with the relevant departments
  • Resolve intercompany issues with our various international joint ventures and affiliated studios, and work closely with business & legal affairs units for affiliated companies such as Carnival (UK), Lark (Canada), Working Title Television (UK), Matchbox (Australia), Heyday Productions (UK), etc.
  • Review budgets and other financial data associated with the development and production of aforesaid programming
  • Draft short-form deal memos, reviewing agreements for accuracy of terms negotiated and coordinating the processing of invoices based on required contractual obligations
  • Advise senior executives on strategic and complex deal structures as well as proactively identify and advise on business and legal risks and opportunities
  • Liaise with senior business leaders to understand territory-to-territory business objectives, strategic goals and focus areas for the company


Minimum 10 years of experience working in transactional entertainment law with at least 6 years of experience in scripted television business affairs in a studio environment
Juris Doctor (JD) required and active membership in the California State Bar preferred

Desired Characteristics

The ideal candidate will be a confident expert in global scripted original production television business matters that actively pursues creative business solutions to complex international matters - as well as:
Proven experience negotiating original scripted development and series related agreements with multiple stakeholders for broadcast and/or cable scripted programming
Excellent negotiating skills and a strong strategist who is able to present, develop and guide multi-territory negotiations through to closure
Strong knowledge of the SAG-AFTRA, WGA and DGA basic agreements, and familiarity with foreign production and guild and union requirements.
Detailed oriented and demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment.
Proven ability to make sound and fair business decisions.
Strong leader and persuasive communicator with a vision; proven ability to self-motivate, work independently as well as collaboratively
Superior organizational and communication skills, exceptional ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
